The New Textile Conservation Centre in Glasgow Opened by HRH The Princess Royal

It was a sad day for all of us when the closure of the Textile Conservation Centre at Southampton University based in Winchester was announced some years ago. In spite of many protests and much lobbying, the closure went ahead. Who then could have forseen that that the Textile Conservation Centre would rise again like the phoenix from the ashes? So, it was a wonderful occasion on Wednesday when The Princess Royal who had been patron of the TCC for 15 years, opened the door of the new TCC at Glasgow University. Teaching will be object based and research will encompass conservation and the physical sciences as well as art history, dress and textile history. The centre will have the excellent resources of the Hunterian and Kelvingrove Museum to draw upon (the later housing some 17,500 textile objects), as well as the world famous Burrell Collection.
